Instruction hours
Day classes are 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Students are expected to do homework assignments and work in Burlington English. Evening classes are 6:00 - 9:00 pm. This year, classes for both day and evening classes will include in-person instruction and online instruction. Please be on time for class.
Attendance
School policy requires day students to attend at least 4 days a week, 3 days a week for evening students. There is no independent study at this level. Students who do not attend the required days will be dropped from the class.
Burlington English Program
The Burlington English computer program assists students with pronunciation and grammar practice. This program is free to students. If students do not use this program, their accounts will be closed.
School district email
The school district will assign each student an email account. We will use your district accounts for messages and to access assignments through Google Classroom.
Computers
If you don't have a computer, please come to the Learning Center on campus. The adult school has computers/Chromebooks for students to use. (You may not bring them home.) There will be someone to help you if you don't know how to use computers.
Assignments
• You are expected to turn in all assignments on time. I will give due dates.
• For writing assignments, you must NOT use Google translate, and you must NOT copy and paste from the internet.
Using the same name
Please use the same name in class that you gave at the time of registration. Using more than one last name and more than one first name creates problems on your records.
Changing levels
If your class is too easy or too difficult, please speak with the instructor. Instructors can transfer you to another level.
How to pass the class
Attend class on time. Try to attend class every day. You must take the CASAS tests. You must pass the EL Civics tests, unit tests, quizzes and the final exam. You must turn in assignments, and you must participate in class. The teacher will give you a certificate if you pass the level.
CASAS/EL Civics Testing
These are two state tests that students take at Adult School. CASAS (Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System) is a reading and basic skills test to show how much you understand. The test has two parts: a pre-test at the beginning of the semester and a post-test near the end of the semester. We compare your score in the first test to your score in the second test. Our goal is to teach you more English so you can get a higher score in the second test.
The EL Civics test is a topic that your class will choose about using English in your life. Most topics have written and oral parts. This is a good way for you to practice your listening and speaking in class. Some topics include: asking questions about your prescription, job interviews, learning about the US government, filling out medical forms and talking to your doctor.
Books and supplies
There are no books to buy for this class. We have worksheets and you will practice English using a computer program called Burlington English. It’s a good idea to have pencils, a pencil sharpener, blank paper, and a binder.
Class Etiquette
There is NO texting and social media use during class. During online classes, please mute your screen on Zoom whenever necessary so you do not disturb the class. Students are expected to have their cameras on throughout class. You may not take photos of the class without permission.
